The South Lafourche Leonard Miller, Jr. Airport, located in Galliano, Louisiana, has proven to be a valuable element of the transportation system of Lafourche Parish and the State of Louisiana. The airport was originally conceived in the early 1970s by interested citizens of Lafourche Parish working in concert with the Louisiana Office of Aviation and Public Transportation and elected officials who recognized the important role that air transportation was playing and would play in the future of economic development in Lafourche Parish. Recognizing the potential major importance of the South Lafourche Airport in providing air transportation services to support the continued development of Port Fourchon and offshore mineral exploration and production, the Port Commission acquired the South Lafourche Leonard J. Miller, Jr. Airport in November 2001. The Port Commission also acquired the 1,200 acres surrounding the airport, which are slated for industrial development of aviation-related businesses as well as companies in support of oil and gas activities ongoing at Port Fourchon.

Shortly after the airfield acquisition, a Master Plan was produced to provide a clear view of the facility's future and its potential contributions to the region. Quick, short-term improvements were conducted, including establishing onsite security measures, ensuring fueling capabilities, re-surfacing Airport Road, constructing a hangar for aircraft storage, and upgrading the runway markings and lighting. The airfield has an expanded runway capable of accommodating up to twenty-passenger business jets. Companies in Fourchon already have identified the need for adequate air services in close proximity to Fourchon to transport specialized equipment in just-in-time fashion, and the South Lafourche Airport is by far the best option, a short 22-mile drive or 10-minute helicopter ride to Port Fourchon. The airport's location also facilitates emergency response and recovery efforts in times of natural disasters or national crisis.

The economic area surrounding the South Lafourche Airport is growing and changing dramatically. Usage of airport facilities varies and includes private recreational aircraft, search and rescue, crew transportation, flight instruction, fish spotting, and oilfield support services. The increased demand for corporate-related activity is proving to be a critical factor in the intermediate and long-term growth of the airport.

The most significant factor in the future growth at the airport is related to the development of facilities. The runway has been expanded from 3800 to 6500 feet, and since completion of its new runway, jet traffic has increased 300 percent. Expansion continues, and development is constantly in progress.

As a result of the changing nature of the local economy, the Greater Lafourche Port Commission has made a strong commitment to change the airport’s role from a small aircraft recreational facility into a premiere corporate facility. As the airport's capabilities increase, new business develops. Private companies using the airport have already spent over $20 million developing their airfield facilities. The airport is a vital cog in the matrix of transportation, service, and support facilities for the deepwater oil industry in the Gulf of Mexico.
