When the Port Commission realized that the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico development would place unprecedented demand on port property, they aggressively began searching for expansion options. Expanding north of the E-Slip development was the most feasible and cost-effective option. Through tireless efforts and intense negotiations with landowners, the Commission acquired 4,000 acres north of the E-slip for expansion of Port facilities. Within a year, the Commission had acquired the neccessary permits to construct, came to agreement on its mitigation responsibilities, and began an aggressive port expansion effort.
The Port is nearing completion of Phase I of its Northern Expansion, a 700 acre site which includes 180 acres of non-waterfront property and 520 acres with 21,000 linear feet of water frontage. Construction of bulkhead is under way in Slip B. A new 700 foot section is complete, with 1,100 additional feet currently under construction and another 1,425 feet to begin in 2010.
Over 80% of Phase I property is already leased by companies eager to reserve their spots in the Gulf region's premiere port.
